Up next is Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur who talks about his current season. So far they are 4-15 on the year, but it looks like the team has turned the corner after splitting their last four games and are 2-0 in conference play.
1. What expectations do you have this year for your team?
My expectations are for us to improve every day, every week, and every game. I think we have a strong group, but not as much experience as we have had in years past. We really need to focus on getting better throughout the season, so we are peaking at conference championships at the end of April. Our goal is always to win our conference.
2. What are the strengths of your team?
I think we have more depth at 2M and 2MD than we have had in the past. We also have good drivers, but having more options in front of the cage on offense and defense is something new for us.
3. What would qualify to you as a successful season this year?
As a coach, I do not think qualifying a successful season based on a win-loss record or league finish is the right approach. Our main focus is to keep improving as a team, and we will see where that takes us.
4. Can you tell me about your incoming freshman for this year and how they will fit into the team this year?
We have a six strong freshman, and I am very excited about this class. We do not have a goalie or a lefty in the freshman class, but we have good centers, center defenders, and drivers. We have freshman that can help us at all three of those positions this year.
5. What players do you think could have a breakout year?
We have several players who are going to play more than they have in years past. I'd rather not make predictions on this because I think they all have the potential to have breakout years.
