Host Santa Barbara Gauchos upset No. 3 Stanford Cardinal 12-9 in the second round of the SoCal tournament. This is revenge since the last time the two teams played Stanford won 8-7 at their own pool. Stanford was in good shape for most of the game and held an 8-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but then the two teams went in opposite directions.
Santa Barbara had a huge fourth quarter where they put up six goals, while their defense shut down Stanford to just a single goal. At the onset of the fourth quarter UCSB quickly responded quickly to tie the game at eight when Evan Dellinger scored at 4:08. UCSB then scored two unanswered goals en route to their 12-9 upset win.
Stanford - 2 2 4 1 = 9
UCSB - 2 1 3 6 = 12
Stanford Goals - Avery 2, Bonanni 2, Bowen 2, Cleary, Gamble, Hoversten
UCSB Goals - Gronow 3, Zhang 3, Jordan 2, Dellinger, Miller, D. Shoemaker, Van de Mortel
Goalie Saves - Platshon 10 (Stanford); Christian 15 (UCSB)
UCSB now moves onto the semifinals where they will take on No. 2 UCLA Bruins while Stanford will face No. 7 Pepperdine.
