Team USA was able to secure a berth to the 2013 FINA World Championships by finishing in second place at the UANA qualification tournament.

The men's United States water polo team did just enough to qualify for the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, later this year in July. Team USA earned their bid by defeating Argentina, for the second time, 15-8, and that propelled them to the title game with a rematch against Canada.

The second game against Canada was much closer this time around with the final score being in favor of Canada, 6-5. Team USA was led by Nikola Vavic who scored two goals, and the late rally by the Americans was not enough to beat their neighbors up North.

Canada came out strong to lead 4-0 through the second quarter, and it was not until the 2:48 mark of the second quarter when Team USA got on the board. That goal was scored by Vavic, his first of the game.

The second half is when the United States rallied to come back, they outscored Canada 4-2 in the second half. The United States offense struggled in the fourth quarter, and earned its only goal when Scott Davidson scored to make it a one-goal game with 2:18 left in the game. That was the only goal the Americans could muster in the final period, and missed out on the gold medal.

The area where the United States continues to struggle is their power play chances. Against Canada they went a terrible 0 for 8, while Canada went 4 of 9. If the United States could somehow manage to convert more power plays, then they team would actually be closer on par to the best teams in the world. This issue also hurt them, and helped them, during the Olympics, but it was more on the negative side for Team USA at London.

Getting to FINA was the main goal even though the team did not perform all that well. The bright side is that it gave some new players a chance to play on the national team in an important tournament, so next time they are called up they will be ready to play.

United States rebounded nicely after falling to host Canada in their inaugural game by winning their next two games.

Looks like the men's United States team will likely earn a bid for the 2013 FINA World Championships later this year. Team USA suffered a bad loss to host Canada in their opening round game, 10-6, but since then they have routed Argentina and Brazil.

Against Brazil, Team USA won 14-2 and were led by national team newcomer Nikola Vavic with four goals, followed by Jesse Smith who had three. The game was over after the first period when the United States took an 8-2 lead, and never looked back.

The power play was much better for Team USA, they made 6 of 7 extra man chances, as well as converted both penalty shots in the blow out win.

In Friday's game against Argentina, the United States once again had no issues in their 13-3 win. The scoring was balanced in this game with three players finding the back of the net twice. Team USA used a methodical scoring attack to slowly pull away from Argentina. They lead 3-1 after the first, 5-1 at the half, 9-2 after the third period and then scored four goals to win by 10 goals.

Team USA is now down with preliminary games and will now facing Argentina again, but this game is much more important. The winner of this game earns a bid to the 2013 FINA World Championships, and the way the United States rebounded after losing to Canada, they should get the win.

The United States fell in terrible fashion to host Canada in their opening game at the 2013 UANA tournament,

The men's United States water polo team was expected to breeze through the UANA qualification tournament and earn a bid to the 2013 FINA World Championships. However, after Wednesday's night's 10-6 loss to Canada, nothing is for certain.

This loss is the United States sixth straight dating back to the London Olympics, and to add even more salt to the wound the last two loses came against Australia and now Canada. As mentioned from the above mentioned tweet, this is the first time that Canada has beaten the United States in a major international competition.

There is little detail from this game so far, but it was not pretty. Canada started out strong by leading 4-2 after the first period, and then shutting down Team USA in the second quarter. At the half Canada had a commanding 7-2 lead, and Team USA was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

The United States had their chances by forcing nine exclusions, but they only converted 1 of 9, well technically they made three goals after a kick out as the other two scores came just after the 20 second penalty expired. While Canada was able to convert 3 of 4 power plays, and the other was made at the 21st second after the exclusion, basically they were perfect in their power play chances.

The United States was led in scoring by Scott Davidson with two goals, but the big surprise was that Jesse Smith was held scoreless.

Losing this game is just unacceptable. Canada was pumped for this game since it was being played in their own backyard, but they have not had any significant water polo history. Without much more information it is hard to tell how Canada scored their goals, because it was not on their power play chances.

A likely reason that Team USA lost was due to a lack of focus -- as well as shooters -- because they probably felt they could walk into this tournament and breeze to a victory. The team had just four returning Olympians out of the 13, an interim head coach who knew this is likely their only tournament he would be coaching and just six weeks of training.

That combination is very dangerous, plus when the team trained in Northern California interim coach Jovan Vavic was not there to coach the team since he was busy coaching USC.

The new set of players was probably not a good idea for this tournament. Bring back at least half of the Olympic team, if that was possible, and take this tournament very seriously.

This loss makes things very uncertain for Team USA the rest of the way through this tournament. They did beat Argentina in an exhibition match last week, so that is a positive. Their next game is Thursday against Brazil, who currently is in a fight in their game.

Team USA needs to put this loss behind them and come out with a strong performance against Brazil to avoid starting 0-2.

Monmouth College made it official on Wednesday when they announced that the men's and women's water polo team would be moving up to the varsity level.

Monmouth College has finally made it official on Tuesday when the school announced that both the men's and women's water polo team would move up to varsity status. The men's side was a given for awhile that they would make the leap, but adding the women's side is an added bonus.

Alex de la Pena, the Scots swim coach and head of aquatics sports at Monmouth, feels this is a great move for the school:

"The elevation to a varsity sport for both the men's and women's water polo teams will put us in a great position to have a very strong aquatics program," explained de la Pena. "Polo and swimming go hand-in-hand. We're looking forward to the start of a tremendous program at Monmouth."

The men's team will be playing in the Western part of the Southern Division with Mercyhurst University, Gannon University, Notre Dame College, Washington & Jefferson College, Penn State Behrend and Salem International University. Playing in that division does give Monmouth a fighting chance to become a solid team.

The one interesting note is that on the men's side, Monmouth will not be playing any home games while they are in CWPA. There is no elaboration but that likely seems to mean just league games, it is hard to justify not allowing them to host teams at their campus for a non-conference tournament.

As for the women's team being added, it comes at a good time since Colorado State just announced that they are dripping their women's program. Also, this adds another truly Midwest team for women's water polo to go along with Notre Dame College, Indiana, Macalester College and Michigan.

However, the women's program is going to be joining the Division III ranks, and will be grouped with Carthage College, Connecticut College, Grove City College, Macalester College, Penn State Behrend, Utica College and Washington & Jefferson College.

The 2013 UANA tournament begins on Jan. 30 and runs through Feb. 3.

The United States men's national team takes part in the 2013 international event of the new year, and it is a huge tournament. The UANA Tournament is a four-team qualification tournament where the top two squads earn a spot at the 2013 FINA World Championships which will be played at Barcelona in July.

The United States has a roster mixed of former Olympians, players with international club experience and some high thought of college players.
The other teams are Argentina, Canada and Brazil; none of which were in the prior Olympics. Even with a roster that has been practice for about six weeks, Team USA should be able to win the tournament.
The United States announced their roster for the 2013 UANA roster, and it has a vastly different look than the London Olympics roster.

The men's United States water polo will be attempting to qualify for the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona this Summer, but first they must finish in the top two at the 2013 UANA tournament.

The roster for this tournament is very different from the 2012 London Olympic roster. There are just four players who played in the London Olympics.

Here is the roster (Olympic players are bolded):

Chay Lapin, Goalkeeper (Long Beach, CA/UCLA/NYAC)
Andy Stevens, Goalkeeper (Villa Park, CA/LMU/NYAC)
Ryan Bailey, Center (Long Beach, CA/UC-Irvine/Newport WPF)
Tommy Corcoran, Center (Coronado, CA/USC/Olympic Club)
Jesse Smith, Defender (Coronado, CA/Pepperdine/NYAC)
Jeff Powers, Utility (San Luis Obispo, CA/UC-Irvine/Newport WPF)
Alex Bowen, Attacker (Santee, CA/Stanford/Stanford)
Griffin Lerman, Defender (Monte Sereno, CA/UC-Irvine/Newport WPF)
Jeffrey Schwimer, Center (Beverly Hills, CA/Stanford/NYAC)
Nikola Vavic, Attacker (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/USC/Trojan WP)
Bret Bonanni, Attacker (Huntington Beach, CA/Stanford/Stanford)
JP MacDonell, Attacker (Redwood City, CA/Pepperdine/Olympic Club)
Scott Davidson, Attacker (Seal Beach, CA/UCLA/NYAC)

This list of players are one's that are up and coming college stars and others who have played at the club level overseas. This tournament is a big deal since if the United States finishes in the top two they earn a spot for the FINA World Championships in July.

In saying that, the competition is not that stiff in Argentina, Brazil and host Canada.
